June 6th is National Cancer Survivors Day ®
The first Sunday in June is dedicated to National Cancer Survivors Day ® (NCSD). The annual day is commemorated globally and provides an opportunity for all those living with a history of cancer to connect, acknowledge their caregivers and supporters, inspire those recently diagnosed, support families, and most importantly celebrate milestones and create awareness through community outreach.
More than 16.9 million Americans are cancer survivors, but sadly many get a new diagnosis every day. This celebration of life promotes research, resources, and survivor-friendly legislation to improve cancer survivors’ quality of life. Community events are encouraged across the globe through the National Cancer Survivors Day ® Foundation.
Who is the National Cancer Survivors Day ® Foundation?
The nonprofit organization works diligently to improve the quality of life for cancer survivors by raising awareness of the ongoing challenges of cancer survivorship. The esteemed foundation provides free guidance, education, and support to hundreds of hospitals, support groups, and other cancer-related organizations that host NCSD in their communities.
Advances in cancer prevention, early detection, treatment, and follow-up care have increased dramatically throughout the years allowing Americans to survive the potentially fatal disease. However, cancer survivors are at a greater risk for developing secondary cancers and other medical conditions that affect their health. Events such as the NCSD recognize the problems that arise after the treatments such as emotional, physical, and financial hardships. Therefore, it is important to remember that their advocacy never ends just because the treatment does.
